Judge Joel Lamont Lofton received his B.A. from University of California, Riverside and his J.D. from Southwestern School of Law. After graduation from law school, he worked at the African Community Resource Center and passed the California bar in 2004. He began working as a deputy public defender in Los Angeles in 2005, and joined the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 2009, becoming a Captain in 2011. He also teaches Contemporary Criminal Procedure at California State University, Los Angeles. He was appointed to the bench in 2015 by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.
