Judge John Porter Doyle received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College in 1971 and, after serving in the Navy and working as a teacher, he obtained his J.D. from Hasting College of the Law in 1978. He passed the California bar in 1978 and the New York bar in 1979, taking a job as an associate at Coudert Borther and then at Hughes, Hubbard & Reed. In 1982, he joined the civil division of the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney’s Office, switching to the criminal division in 1984. He then re-entered private practice in 1987 where he remained until he was appointed to the bench in 1996. He has served as a member of Pepperdine Law School’s adjunct faculty starting in 1993.
