Judge Katherine Anne Bacal received her B.A. in literature and the history of ideas from the University of Redlands in 1985. She then pursued a Ph.D. in European history from the University of California, San Diego before instead obtaining her J.D. from the University of Texas in Austin in 1991. After passing the California bar in 1991, she joined Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as an associate until 2000 when she joined Baker & McKenzie, becoming partner in 2003. In private practice she focused on defending class actions and unfair business practices cases. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2008.
