Judge Malcolm H. Mackey was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946-1948. He received his A.B. in psychology from New York University in 1951. After graduation, he worked as a sales representative for the Tidewater Oil Company and then the Richfield Oil Company until 1955. In 1958, he obtained his J.D. from Southwestern Law School, passing the California bar in 1959. From 1958-1959, he worked as an associate at Bolton, Groff & Dunne Law Offices. He then worked as a sole practitioner trial attorney from 1959-1978. His work in private practice focused on insurance, personal injury, and criminal cases. He was elected to the bench in 1978.
