Judge Martha K. Gooding received her B.A. Phi Beta Kappa from California State University, Long Beach in 1978 and her J.D. first in her class and Order of the Coif from University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 1981. After passing the California bar in 1981, she worked as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Aubrey E. Robinson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. In 1983 she became an associate and later partner at Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabin, joining Howrey LLP as a partner in 2000. In 2011 she became a partner at Jones Day where she remained until she was appointed to the bench by Governor Jerry Brown in 2013. Her work in private practice focused on intellectual property. She is a democrat.
