Melissa Renee Hammond was born and raised in Los Angeles and, as early as five and six years old, would accompany her father (a criminal defense attorney) to court. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego in 2001 and her J.D. from UCLA School of Law in 2004. During law school, she interned for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in the Major Narcotics Division. After passing the California bar in 2004, she worked at Brown, Winfield, & Canzeroni focusing on real estate and municipal law while representing public entities. In 2005, she joined the Public Defender’s Office until she attended New York University School of Law for an L.L.M. degree, where she met her husband (they have three kids). After graduation from NYU in 2008, she returned to Los Angeles where she began working for the District Attorney’s Office. She was elected to the bench in 2022.
