Judge Melvin Dean Sandvig received his J.D. from what is now the University of LaVerne College of Law while working as a police officer. After passing the California bar in 1981, he practiced civil law until retiring from the police force in 1987. Thereafter, he represented LAPD officers before the police department’s board of appeals until 1998 when he was appointed to the bench by Governor Pete Wilson. He is listed as a business partner on the website of Royal High School in Simi Valley and he handed out the 2013 Civic Learning Award of Merit to the Ivy Academia Entrepreneurial Charter School.
