Originally from Los Angeles, Judge Michael John Shultz received his B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara and his J.D. from Loyola Law School Los Angeles. After passing the California bar in 1991, he joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. During that time, he was the assistant training coordinator and reached the level of deputy public defender IV. In 2005, he became panel appellate attorney for the California Appellate Project. That same year, he became a law professor at Loyola Law School Los Angeles and clinical director of the Loyola Law School Center for Juvenile Law and Policy. He taught advanced criminal litigation skills and juvenile delinquency law and procedure. He was then elected to commissioner in 2009 and appointed to the bench in 2012 by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. He is a democrat.
