Judge Rene Caldwell Gilbertson received her B.A. from Wake Forest University in 1989 and her J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1992, but finishing her law degree at Loyola Law School. After passing the California bar in 1994, she worked at the Alliance for Children’s Rights as a staff attorney and interim executive director from 1994-1996. She then worked as a staff attorney at the Children’s Law Center from 1996-1998. In 1999, she began working at the Los Angeles Office of County Counsel, rising to the role of deputy county counsel in 2008. Before becoming a judge, she practiced in the area of juvenile law, specifically child neglect and abuse. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. after winning an election in 2018. She is married to Jack Gilbertson, a health and corporate law attorney at Dentons U.S., has four children, and is a Democrat.
