Judge Stephen Ira Goorvitch received his B.A. in sociology, magna cum laude, from the University of California, San Diego where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, where he was Executive Editor of the California Law Review and served on the Moot Court Board. After passing the California bar in 1998, he worked at the SEC, Division of Enforcement from 1998-2001, prosecuting financial fraud cases, including offering fraud, market manipulation, and fraudulent broker-dealer practices. He then became a law clerk for the Honorable Nora M. Manella in the Central District of California from 2001-2002 and the Honorable Rosemary S. Pooler at the Second Circuit from 2002-2003. Thereafter, he joined O’Melveny & Myers LLP from 2003-2007, focusing his practice on securities investigations and litigation. He then became a U.S. Attorney in the Central District of California from 2007-2015. He was appointed to the bench in 2015 by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., and is a democrat.
