Originally from Boston, Judge Stuart Mark Rice received his B.A. in history magna cum laude from Tufts University and his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law. After passing the California bar in 1978, he worked at Gottlieb, Gottlieb and Stein until 1983 when he co-founded the firm of Rice and Rothenberg. His work in private practice involved civil and business litigation, probate, and serving as conflict counsel in South District juvenile delinquency cases. He was also a referee in Long Beach. He was elected commissioner in 2003 and then was appointed to the bench in 2005 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has served as a member of the State Bar Board of Governors, the Legal Services Trust Fund Commission, the Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission, and was president of the Long Beach Barristers, the Long Beach Bar Association, and the California Young Lawyers Association.
