Judge Thomas Donald Long received his A.B. in history phi beta kappa with university distinction and departmental honors from Stanford University in 1979 and his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1982 while on the Stanford Law Review. After passing the California bar in 1982, he worked at Hufstedler, Miller, Carlson and Beardsley, then at Youngman, Hungate and Leopold starting in 1983, and then at Heller, Ehrman, White and McAuliffe in 1985. In 1989 he joined Nossaman LLP where he remained, becoming partner two years later. He also served as the firm’s risk management partner. From 2003 to 2011 he was a member of the Ranchos Palos Verdes City Council, serving as Mayor in 2007 and 2011. His work in private practice focused on litigation, construction, and insurance recovery and counseling. He also belonged to the American Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers, Association of Business Trial Lawyers, and the City of Rancho Palos Verdes View Restoration Commission. He was appointed to the bench in 2015 by Governor Jerry Brown. He is a democrat.
