Judge Upinder Singh Kalra received his B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his J.D. from UCLA School of Law. After passing the California bar in 1990, he worked as a deputy public defender in Los Angeles until 1995 when he became a deputy alternate public defender. He was appointed to the bench in 2010 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is a democrat.
